Peter Ustinov School, Essen
The Peter Ustinov School in Essen is a community primary or elementary school with an open all-day program and collaborative learning. The school is located in Essen Katernberg, directly on the city’s border to Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen. The schoolyards, which have been converted into a “moving playground”, offer the children plenty of space to climb and play, to explore their surroundings and to learn. The school is currently attended by about 170 children from different countries of origin, about 82% with a migration background. Since the beginning of the school year 2003/2004 it has been an open, full-day school and offers homework supervision, support, education and training in classes and working groups every day from 8 am to 4 pm. As of the school year 2012/2013, the school dedicated itself to “communal learning” and currently supports 19 children with various special educational means.
